It’s a given that every bookseller loves reading. We couldn’t be doing our jobs properly if we didn’t. We grab a book every second we can and follow the author into a world that is either quite different or very much alike our own.
But there is another thing a bookseller couldn’t imagine to live without: you – the customers. You allow us entrance into your mind and into your heart and sometimes, for just a little while, we are able to make a difference in your life.
Being a bookseller can be a very rewarding job. Most customers are loyal and friendly and very much in love with books.
But some days, customers inadvertently can be quite funny as well. There are titles, messily written down during a phone call with a friend. There are frantic searches for a book with a red cover and black letters, last seen about half a year ago on a specific table in the fiction section. Sometimes the author and the title don’t match – at all.
Jen Campbell in London decided to collect all these extraordinary moments from booksellers all over the world. The first book, Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops, was published last year and was an amazing success. The responses from both booksellers and customers were so enthusiastic that a sequel has been published this year, named More Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops.
Booksellers love these books because they catalogue many hilarious moments that have happened in quite the same way to all of us.
For these moments we love you even more.
